Carbon12 is a wooden building in north Portland, Oregon, in the United States. The 8-story structure built with Oregon-made cross laminated timber became the tallest wood building in the United States, upon its completion.
History
For more than a century, building codes in the United States discouraged wood framings in 5-floor buildings or higher. The Carbon12 building ran in the USDA’s Tall Wood Buildings contest (2014) but did not win the prize. Oregon Governor Kate Brown was present when the building reached its peak height. Its title of tallest wood building in the United States is already being jeopardized by a new 148-feet, 11-floor wood-framing building in Portland, Framework, under construction.
Description
The building measures 85 feet high for 8 floors, 2 units per floor. The building employs mass timber, laminated timber and Carbon-12 (CLT, carbon-laminated timber) in its structural system. Steel is used in the core and for connecting braces, and concrete for the basement, ground floor and garage (automated garage), with two ground floor retail spaces. Wooden high-rise buildings have been encouraged on a federal level, and is acclaimed as a booster for Oregon's dwindling timber industry.
Location
Carbon12 is in north Portland, Oregon, in the United States, on the corner of North Williams Avenue and Northeast Fremont Street.
